Michigan lawmakers calling for deeper investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s ties to Interlochen
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan lawmakers are calling for a deeper investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s connections to Michigan, pointing to allegations raised in newly public court documents about his ties to Interlochen Center for the Arts in Grand Traverse County.
The renewed push comes as survivor and advocate Jena-Lisa Jones plans to visit Ann Arbor next week to join community members at the annual Take Back the Night rally, an event focused on supporting survivors and raising awareness about sexual violence.
Jones, who says she met Epstein in Palm Beach, Fla., when she was 14 years old, has become a national advocate for survivors and for greater transparency about Epstein’s network.
“Once you have children, you look at your children and understand the fight and the need to speak out and put pressure on people,” Jones said.
Allegations and new attention on Interlochen
Interest in Epstein’s Michigan ties has increased following the release of a large trove of Department of Justice documents related to the federal investigation. Jones and other survivors have pushed for public access to records tied to Epstein.
Among the documents highlighted by lawmakers is a 2020 court filing in which a Jane Doe alleged she met Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell at Interlochen in the 1990s when she was 13 years old — a claim that, if verified, could place potential abuse in Michigan and could make her one of Epstein’s earliest known victims.
State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou, D-East Lansing, said the allegations underscore the need to understand how Epstein gained access to spaces where children should have been safe.
“So, it really has widespread impact that someone like Epstein could go there and find victims at this place where children should be safe,” Tsernoglou said.
Epstein was a summer student at Interlochen in the late 1960s and later became a frequent donor. Department of Justice documents indicate his donations totaled more than $400,000.
Jones — who did not attend Interlochen — said prestigious programs can still be places where young people are vulnerable to manipulation.
Lawmakers request oversight investigation
Tsernoglou said state lawmakers have grounds to investigate Epstein’s Interlochen ties because the center has received state funding. She wrote a letter to the chair of the Michigan House Oversight Committee requesting bipartisan action.
“Democrats, Republicans, Independents. All regular people can agree that this is the type of thing that as a society we have to prevent,” Tsernoglou said.
Lawmakers urging the committee to investigate said they are still waiting for a response to their request.
WILX News 10 has reached out to House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. Jay DeBoyer for comment and has not received a response.
Ann Arbor rally details
Jones is scheduled to join community members in Ann Arbor for the Standing Tough Against Rape Society’s annual Take Back the Night rally on Thursday, April 2, at the University of Michigan Union Ballroom.
This year’s theme is “Your Story Matters.” The event will also be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person.
Jones said speaking openly about abuse is critical to prevention and change.
“If we’re not speaking about this and talking about the dark stuff that happens behind doors, how are we ever supposed to make a change and educate people on how to prevent this from happening again?” she said.
