Epstein’s right-hand man Ghislaine Maxwell is heard: ‘She wants to be released’

‘Strategic game’
But both experts do not suspect that very exciting revelations will be made today. They argue that Maxwell is engaged in a strategic game. “She has one goal and that is to get released,” says Brink. “She is the only one in the United States who is behind bars because of this enormous file.”
Maxwell is therefore in custody, but last year it was announced that she was transferred from a maximum security prison to a less secure location in Texas. That happened after she had a conversation with Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general. “He was also Donald Trump’s chief lawyer,” Brink says. “The fact that she was transferred was very remarkable.”
“The only way Maxwell can be released is through a pardon from President Trump,” he said. The experts therefore think that whatever Maxwell says, she will wonder whether it will jeopardize her request for a pardon from Trump. Manusama: “The documents also showed contact between Epstein and Howard Lutnick, the Secretary of Commerce in the Trump administration. If Maxwell wants to keep Trump friendly, I don’t think she should say too much about Lutnick.”
“Maybe she throws some meat to the dog,” he continues, “or in other words, she names her strategic names that the audience will get away with.” Part of the strategy could be that Maxwell mainly talks about Europeans. This way she can show what she knows and who she can endanger. This allows her to draw the attention of Donald Trump.
Right to remain silent
It is also possible that Maxwell invokes her right to remain silent. Brink: “Even though she is being heard under oath, she does not have to cooperate in her own conviction. So she does not have to answer all the questions. At the same time, you of course place a large exclamation mark above a question if you do not want to answer it. Saying nothing can actually raise questions.”
Reuters news agency reported that Maxwell would not answer questions today, but would read a statement ahead of the hearing. She is said to be planning to invoke the right not to testify against herself.
